I had the opportunity and pleasure to interview the amazing artist. Here is what she has to share with the readers.
Mozella Malone: What helped you get into music?
Tocarra: I wrote poems and short stories when I was in elementary school. I didn’t realize that I was an artist at that time. However, my teachers would absolutely love them! Also, I really enjoyed putting words together. I met my first producer, Aaron “Comprehend” Robinson, who took me under his wings. Shortly after, he began to work with me in the studio on some solo projects of various genres, such as dance, house music and mainly experimental music where I would flow over the track. Not too long thereafter, he began to introduce me to people in the industry.
Mozella: Do you have any new projects out?
Tocarra: Yes! Absolutely! I have a new single out titled “Lick Back,” featuring Chicago’s legendary R&B/Pop platinum recording artist BenOne. It’s produced my Charles “Unkahmn” Price. BenOne and Unkahmn were so great and amazing to work with in the studio. You can listen to “Lick Back” on all digital platforms where my music is available. I also have a single titled “It’s A Party,” featuring hip hop icon and legend, Keith Murray, affiliated with Def Squad/LOD. I am very grateful for this collaboration.
Mozella: Tell us more about your new record “Lick Back.”
Tocarra: It’s a summer anthem! The record has its own unique sound. It’s a very catchy record with amazing fun and exciting lyrics, yet with a very very captivating hook. When you listen to it, the song simply captures your attention. The chorus and first verse carries BenOne’s beautiful voice. He sings about how a female, which is his girl, can’t wait to get him back if he chooses to break her heart. And if he does so, the female will seek revenge. When people hear “Lick Back” I want individuals to feel empowered and have strength and confidence in their relationship with their partner. Ladies – it is okay to demand respect within your relationship.
Mozella: Who or what was the inspiration behind your single, “It’s A Party” featuring Keith Murray?
Tocarra: That would be Aaron “Comprehend” Robinson. He produced the track and thought Keith Murray would make a perfect fit. We reached out to him and we were excited when he loved the track and without a doubt he jumped on it. That was a very gratifying moment. A big shout out to Keith Murray!!!
Mozella: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a woman in the music industry?
Tocarra: The music industry is male dominated. However, I try to surround myself around the people who have my best interest and cares about my music career. Depending on the levels that you reach, you have to be prepared mentally because some people may feel as if you are out shining them and they can become competitive. Though, I don’t look at it that way. I am just working hard and doing what I love to do.
Mozella: What would you say to young women who want to get in the music/entertainment industry?
Tocarra: I would tell them to never let anyone tell you that you can’t be great at what you love to do. Stay focused and determined. Also, you have to keep working diligently and continue to stay persistent. Surround yourself around good people – those individuals who have your best interest that will allow you to grow and be the best ‘YOU’ that ‘YOU’ can be. Most importantly learn the business aspect of the industry and continue to perfect your craft.
Mozella: Do you have any plans for the future?
Tocarra: I plan to continue to make great music and collaborate with great artist and producers. I also look to reach many more people with my music in hopes of giving them something great and unique to listen to.
Mozella: What is one thing you would tell your fans?
Tocarra: I would like to tell my fans thank you for staying with me on this journey and movement. It’s because of you that I am able to do what I love. So thank you so much for the love!!!
Mozella: How may your fans follow you?
Tocarra: Continue to follow me on Instagram @TocarraMusikWorld and on Twitter @TocarraMusik. Thanks for supporting my music.
